Improve your Website Speed

One of the best ways to improve your site usability is to increase speed. Simply speaking, users prefer fast sites which in turn give lower bounce rates and higher customer satisfaction. It is so vital in fact that Amazon report a 1%+ revenue increase for every 100ms faster in speed that their site is.

Google Developers have a great Page Speed Insights tool that allows you to score your Mobile and Desktop sites with 'Should Fix', 'Consider Fixing' and User Experience suggestions for your website. You can then drill down by each fix suggestion to see what should be removed and optimised so you can see exactly what should be updated.

Google Analytics also has a new Speed Suggestion Report that can be viewed under 'Behaviour' -> 'Speed Suggestions' in the Analytics Console. It connects up with the Page Speed Insights tool and shows you page by page, your PageSpeed Score, Suggestions, Average Page Load Times (sec) and event Server Response Times, Connection Times and Domain Lookup Time.

Many of the suggestions from Google centre around the need for less calls to external scripts and images, increasing browser caching, loading javascripts below the fold, optimising images, enabling compression and minifying css/javascript/html to improve this site speed.

“We encourage you to startlooking at your sites speed - not only to improve your ranking in search engines, but also to improve everyones experience on the Internet.”- Amit Singhal & Matt Cutts, Google Search Quality Team
